Sage Research Methods: Datasets

Using Sage Research Methods Datasets

The Datasets collections offer sample datasets and instructional guides for hands-on data analysis practice. They are indexed by method and data type are optimized for classroom use. Datasets appear alongside other content on the Sage Research Methods homepage tiles, or you can browse them by method, discipline and academic.

1 The Dataset tab will allow you to download the sample data and accompanying instructional guides. Quantitative datasets are available in a number of file formats for use with major statistical software packages.
2 The “Teaching and Learning Material” tab gives you access to teaching and student guides, as well as how-to guides for specific statistical packages featured in the dataset.
3 Direct link to the Methods Map offers a deeper exploration of the method applied in a dataset.

Datasets can be found by: methoddiscipline, or data type. Datasets are also included in the search results of Sage Research Methods.

 Each content page includes:

  1. A definition and illustrative example of the method
  2. A description of the data
  3. Instruction on how to apply the method to the data
  4. Tips for presenting the findings
  5.  A link to the original complete dataset or research project when available

For Quantitative datasets, the data will be available in multiple file formats, suitable for various statistical software package. Codebooks and select software guides are also available.

For qualitative guides, the data is usually in the form of the Word doc, and the directions for analysis can be downloaded or found in the overview on the dataset landing page.

Quick Tips

Datasets are designed to help faculty explain data analysis to students.

Reflective Questions

Many datasets contain Reflective Questions or a review at the bottom of the dataset. Use this section as a homework assignment or to encourage class discussion.

Also using this Dataset

Some datasets are analyzed in several different Sage Research Methods Datasets and can be useful teaching tools. One such dataseries is Cross-Tabulation and the News Coverage Index (2012): The Geographic Focus of TV News Stories. To find other Teaching Datasets that use this dataset, look to the right menu underneath the site and share buttons. In this particular case, it's easy to see a Pearson's Chi-Squared Test dataset, a Frequency Distribution dataset, and One-way and Two-way ANOVA datasets that use the same data.

Download Formats
